Goodbye 2008 - Hello 2009

Despite a rocky national economy, 2008 has been our best year yet. Here is a brief recap of our year.

In February, we helped Sheketa and Joseph organize a great ceremony and reception at La Luna Banquet Hall.

We celebrated 2 birthdays in March: The Francis twins' 80s-inspired Sweet 16 and the "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy"-themed surprise 40th at Dave + Buster's. How can I forget to note that I was featured in the premiere issue of Bucks County Woman magazine? WOO HOO!

In May, we worked with Brandy and Geoff to create their glamorous wedding with Paris Caterers at the Palace. We also worked with Sonya and Agoi for their classy nuptials at Blair Mill Inn.

June was special because we coordinated our first destination wedding for Jaye and James on the beach in Cape May, New Jersey.

In August, we worked with Jaye & James again for their big Polynesian-themed reception at Arthur's Catering by Colleen in Southampton. We orchestrated Maisha & Gustavo's boutique hotel wedding at Hilton's Inn at Penn.

We coordinated Ericka and Derrick's country club wedding at Bensalem Township Country Club in September.

We directed the wedding rehearsal for Sonya and Demarco in October. We also did our first Spa Girl Party fundraiser at Sherene's home in Delaware County, PA.

At designated times throughout the year, we engineered fabulous celebrations for Black History Month, Women's History Month, and Hispanic Heritage Month.

Thanks to all of the wedding/event professionals who have worked with us this year. Many thanks to the aspiring wedding/event planners who have assisted on all of these events. Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank all my colleagues (near and far) who have offered advice and inspired me to continue growing.

Here's to an über-fabulous 2009 for all of us!

How Much Does it Cost to Deck the Halls?

(from PECO Energy)
The holiday season is here… and with the holidays comes decorating! PECO offers helpful information to get in the holiday spirit and save money. Below is an easy way to help calculate energy costs this holiday season.

1. Count the number of bulbs on your indoor tree and all of your other decorative indoor and outdoor lights. For example, 1000

2. Check the wattage per bulb -- one watt per bulb is common. For example, 1 watt

3. Multiply watts per bulb by number of bulbs. For example 1,000 x 1 = 1,000

4. Convert to kilowatts (kW) – 1000 watts equals 1 kilowatt. For example, 1 kW

5. Estimate the number of hours in a month the lights are on. For example, 5 hours per day x 30 days = 150 hours.

6. Multiply the total kilowatts by the total number of hours the lights will be on to get the total kilowatt-hours (kWh). For example, 1 kW x 150 hours = 150 kWh

7. Multiply the total kilowatt-hours by the total cost of electricity.

For typical PECO customers, the total cost for generation, transmission and distribution of their electricity is 15 cents per kilowatt-hour. For example, 150 kWh x .15 = $22.50

In our example, the total cost of holiday lighting would be an additional $22.50.

For additional savings, consider using LED holiday lights. A selection of LED holiday lights, and other energy saving products, are available at a 20 percent discount for PECO customers at www.peco.com/SAVE.

Happy New Year

December 24, 2007

'Twas the night before Christmas

The only holiday traditions I remember from my childhood are (1) my brother and I sneaking around to find our hidden presents and carefully unwrapping them just enough to know what was inside and then ever so carefully restoring the package to its originally wrapped state so no one was ever the wiser. (Of course that is just what we thought we were doing. In reality, we did a sloppy job and got busted.) My brother and I also enjoyed our pre-holiday tradition (2) of making extensively detailed wish lists from the Sears Wish Book.

Now that I am a Mommy, I try to create better traditions for my own children, such as our family tree trimming party, putting out cookies (Pepperidge Farm Milanos) & milk for Santa, and reading 'Twas the Night Before Christmas on Christmas Eve.

My son is 3 years old and, if he is anything like his big sister, this will be the year that he asks, "What is a sugar plum?" Thanks to the wonders of the internet, I am ready for him. Not only with a photo...

... but also with a recipe. Oh wait a minute... the list of ingredients includes dried figs and dates. Where are the plums? Maybe I'll just stick with the visions of sugar plums and skip the sampling.

Happy holidays!

Favorite Holiday Drinks

Every now and then, I will come across an item that I want to share with everyone I know. This is one of those times.

Yahoo! has a food blog called The Green Table. For the holiday season, they have posted yummy holiday drink recipes. What is a holiday party without egg nog and apple cider?

Homemade Egg Nog
6 egg yolks
½ pound superfine Sugar
½ quart milk
½ quart heavy cream
1 tablespoon vanilla
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground dry gingerzest from ½ orange
½ quart rum (optional)

In a bowl, gently whisk together the eggs and sugar until smooth. Whisk in the milk, cream, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and orange zest. For best results, make the mix the day before and allow to "rest" overnight in the refrigerator. Strain before serving if you like a smoother texture.

Mulled Cider
1 quart apple cider
10 whole cloves
5 large cinnamon sticks
½ teaspoon nutmeg
¼ cup dark brown sugar
1 knob fresh ginger, peeled and pricked with a fork
zest from ½ lemon1 apple, such as Macoun or McIntosh varieties, washed, cored, and diced

Heat the cider on the stove until hot but not boiling. Add all of the other ingredients (except the lemon zest) and stir to blend. Bring to a gentle simmer over low heat. Remove the ginger (and whole spices, if desired). Add the lemon zest and diced apple. Serve immediately!

I hope your holidays are FABULOUS!

Holiday Party Ideas

(from BrightIdeas.com)

This year, throw a fun holiday theme party! For example, your party theme could be a "bad sweater" party or a "tackiest gift" party. Your guests will share the laughs and have a plenty to talk about!

Add a sentimental touch to your table and decorate it with old pictures of past holidays. You can safely cover pictures in plastic or secure them to place card holders. For extra special decorations, have your guests each bring an old holiday picture of themselves to decorate the table with.

Don't be afraid to use technology to add a little fun to your holiday party! Let your guests take a turn as the DJ. Have everyone bring 3 MP3s of their favorite holiday songs. You can add them to your digital playlist and let the guests introduce their songs.
