Why Do Weddings Bring Out the Worst in Folks?

A wedding is supposed to be about the bride. How beautiful she looks in her dress. How emotional her groom becomes when he sees her for the first time. How happy she is to see all of their friends and family joining in on this momentous occasion.

So why is there always one bridesmaid who starts drama before (or during) the wedding?

Here are some examples from my experiences as a wedding planner:

Wedding #1: The bridesmaid, who invited herself to be in the wedding because her husband is a groomsman, decides to disagree with everything the others are planning for the bridal shower. She doesn't want to wear her hair in the uniform style that everyone else agreed on. She wants to ride in the limo to the church with the bride and the maid of honor instead of riding with the rest of the bridal party. She annoys everyone to the brink of physical harm.

Wedding #2: The maid of honor who has never even been to a wedding wants to point out everything that everyone else is doing wrong. HELLO... How do you know?

Wedding #3: Yet another maid of honor who has never been to a wedding notices that the caterer has not delivered all of the agreed upon amenities. Instead of bringing that to the attention of the catering manager or the wedding planner, she runs to worry the bride and groom about it immediately after they have said their "I Do's".

Wedding #4: It must be something about the maid of honor title that goes straight to the ego... In this case, a week before the wedding, she decides she should wear a different dress than the other girls because she is the maid of honor. She's also skips the rehearsal because she can't get a ride.

Wedding #5: The groom's mother and sister (a bridesmaid) make demands on the bride regarding the wedding party, the guest list, and the wedding day transportation but contribute absolutely no money to the related expenses.

The moral of this story is... the wedding day is all about the bride (ok a little bit about the groom too). If the bride is not happy, then the day is ruined. If you are in the wedding, then bite your tongue, swallow your pride, and go with the program.
