Rules of Engagement

I had a really busy week, but I am back now to talk about what you need to know after you propose to her/accept his proposal.

Decide how long your engagement will be.
  • Select your ideal wedding date (but be flexible as other factors may change the date by a week or so).
  • Determine how much time you will need to prepare for the wedding
  • Typically, the engagement period is 6 months to a year.
  • Allow time to think and do things that are not wedding related.

It must be killing you to keep this news to yourself. Go spill the beans.

Your parents and immediate families should be told first.

  • Tell them together as a couple.
  • If your parents have never met your fiance/fiancee, then you should intoduce them before making your big announcement.
  • If there is a significant reason why telling your parents in person is not the best option, then send a thoughtful letter.

If either of you have children from a previous relationship, then telling them should be your first priority.

  • Give them lots of undivided attention.
  • Organize a fun outing together.
  • Tell the other parent about your engagement yourself. Don't let them find out from the kids.

Next time, I will talk about engagement announcements.

Have a FABULOUS day!
