Wedding Basics: Aisle Runner

Rolling out a beautiful aisle runner before the bridal procession is like rolling out the red carpet for royalty. The aisle runner can be rolled out before the ceremony begins or an usher can roll it out before the flower girl and/or bride walk down the aisle. This is a matter of preference - either way is correct.

If the aisle runner is laid out before the ceremony, guests should not walk on it. The ushers should direct them to their seats from the outer aisles. If there are no ushers, rope off the center aisle until the processional begins.

Aisle runners are generally used for semi-formal and formal weddings. However, some brides choose to use an aisle runner because they hate the carpet in their ceremony site.

Measure your aisle to be sure your aisle runner is the correct length. Erring on the long side is better than falling short.

For outdoor ceremonies, be very careful about laying a runner on the grass. If the grass is too long, the runner will look lumpy and might be a tripping hazard.

Wedding Basics: Flower Girl

The flower girl should be between 4 & 8 years old. Any younger, she may not be able to walk down the aisle on her own without much coaxing. Any older, she should be a junior bridesmaid or have another role in the wedding.

The flower girl's job is to carry a basket of rose petals and toss them along the aisle before the bride walks down. The flower girl walks behind the ring bearer and immediately before the bride.

Wedding Basics: Ring Bearer

A ring bearer is, ideally, a little boy between the ages of 4 & 8. Sometimes, the ring bearer is the family dog, but for the sake of this post, we'll stick with the human pup.

The ring bearer's job is to carry the wedding rings on a decorative pillow. If you are worried that something will happen to the rings, then use imitation rings on the pillow and let the best man hold the real rings.

The ring bearer walks down the aisle after the maid of honor and before the flower girl.
